Dosing & Administering CBD

There are a number of methods whereby CBD can be administered to enable it to enter the bloodstream so it can travel around the body to interact with the cannabinoid receptors.

How you consume the CBD, called the route of administration, will ultimately affect how quickly the effects of CBD will be felt, and how long those effects last.  The body absorbs CBD in different ways, so how you consume it is therefore of paramount importance.

Inhaling CBD (e.g. Vape)
Time taken to feel the effect:Seconds/Minutes
How long the effects last:1 – 3 hours
Advantages:Fast.  High absorption rate.

How long the effects last depends upon how long the smoke/vapours are held in the lungs before exhaling, plus how many puffs are taken per minute.  Smoking/vaping takes a degree of practice so beginners are likely to experience the benefits for a shorter duration of time.

Time taken to feel the effect:1 – 3 hours
How long the effects last:4 – 6 hours
Advantages:Discreet.  Convenient. Easy to take.

Edibles such as capsules, chews, chocolate bars etc. deliver longer lasting therapeutic benefits and the speed of feeling the effects can be increased by consuming the CBD edibles with foods that are high in saturated fats which accelerate the absorption process.

Time taken to feel the effect:Seconds/Minutes
How long the effects last:4 – 6 hours
Advantages:Fast.  High absorption rate.

Cannabis tinctures deliver the best of both worlds. When you place the prescribed dose of a tincture under your tongue (known as sublingual method), it absorbs into your bloodstream almost as quickly as smoke or vapour inhaled into your lungs. After holding the dose under your tongue for a few seconds, you swallow it where it is processed by your digestive system which in turn, increases the duration as if you’d consumed an edible.  Try the peppermint variety as the original is very much an acquired taste!

Time taken to feel the effect:30 – 60 minutes
How long the effects last:4 – 6 hours
Advantages:Targeted application

CBD applied to the skin will never reach the bloodstream, but the CBD will interact with cannabinoid receptors nearby.  Skin does not absorb cannabinoids very well e.g. absorption rates are low, therefore for CBD products to work topically, they must be applied generously and the balm itself must contain high levels of CBD.

How to Choose Your CBD Dosage

  • 1 Start small and increase gradually is by far the most recommended way to work with CBD. As we are all made differently, and we all have different body chemistry, this will affect how our body reacts to CBD and by increasing the dose until we find the ‘sweet spot’ e.g. when the full effects of CBD are felt, is the perfect way to ascertain the body’s perfect dose.
  • 2 When in doubt, it is always a good idea to consult your doctor, especially if you have an existing medical condition and/or are taking a prescription drug.

How to accurately measure your CBD dosage

Tincture - Simply fill the dropper, administer the oil under the tongue, hold for 30 to 90 seconds and swallow.  This method of application uses a dropper, so you need to ascertain how much CBD is in that dropper, so some simple mathematics will be required!

Typically a dropper holds 1 ML of liquid.  If you know how many ml are in a CBD tincture, you can use this simple formula to determine how much CBD is in its dropper:

(Total CBD in Bottle) ÷ (Number of ml in Bottle) = mgs of CBD in a Dropper

For example, let’s say you have a 30ml CBD tincture that has 1500mg of CBD:

1500 ÷ 30 = 50mg of CBD per dropper

Now, if your proper dosage of CBD is 25mg, and a single dropper of that 1500MG tincture contains 50mg, you would simply fill the dropper halfway.

Of course, this method is not 100% accurate, but it is more accurate than not measuring at all!

Remember, start with a small dosage and gradually increase until you find your perfect dosage.

When using a CBD vape you would start by estimating how much CBD is in a dropper (just like with a tincture).  Once you know this, you know how much CBD you are putting into a single tank. As you vape throughout the day, keep an eye on when you need to refill your tank, and how many times you need to refill your tank.

If your proper dosage of CBD is 25mg, and you are using a 1000mg bottle of CBD e-liquid, a single tank would contain approximately 33.33mg of CBD.

Again, not 100% accurate; but with regular monitoring, you will be able to quickly gauge your CBD intake.

The easiest way to measure your CBD dose – Capsules, Tabs that dissolve under the tongue and Gummies!

Because CBD capsules, tabs or gummies are filled/made with an exact amount of CBD they provide an easy, truly accurate way to dose CBD.  For instance, if your optimal CBD dosage is 16mg-25mg then simply buy a bottle of 20mg or 25mg capsules/tabs or gummies and take one.  Easy, quick, and no maths!
